Tiago de Oliveira Pinto

Seminar "Music as living cultural heritage"

Tiago de Oliveira Pinto is a trained musician, musicologist, and cultural anthropologist. He also works as a music producer and curator.

 

As the holder of the world's first UNESCO Chair in musicology, the Chair for Transcultural Music Studies at the Franz Liszt School of Music in Weimar, Tiago de Oliveira Pinto works closely with UNESCO in connection with the 2003 UNESCO Convention on Intangible Cultural Heritage. Since 2025 he is Chair Holder on Musical Heritage Chair at Kronberg Academy.

 

His current research, teaching, and international project work focuses on transcultural music studies and music as a living cultural heritage. Research is conducted as part of collaborative research in Afghanistan, Ethiopia, South Africa, Germany, and Brazil. Several projects have been funded by the German Federal Foreign Office, the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), UNESCO, and other international partner organizations.

 

Prof. Pinto has served as a visiting scholar at Harvard University and as a visiting professor at other universities in the USA, Brazil, Africa, and Southeast Asia. He is, among other things, a member of the German UNESCO Commission, a member of the Academy of Europe and the European Cultural Institute Vila Vigoni in Como, Italy.
